Far from the pressures of parliamentary life, peers of the realm have gathered for a little hunting, shooting and fishing. Unfortunately for them, the particular Arcadian landscape they have chosen is already home to a band of influential fairies, who decide that the peers have enjoyed their privileges for quite long enough. The fairies arrange for a local shepherd boy to be returned to parliament with a large majority, and constitutional reform is high on his agenda…
Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta may be set towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign, but the issues it addresses are as topical today as they were when the piece was written over one hundred years ago. So come and flutter with the fairies before the lords are legislated out of existence, and the Lord Chancellor finds himself replaced by the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs…
