Gondoliers

Monday 15 - Saturday 20 May 2006 at the Oxford Playhouse

In the early 18th century, Venice had endured a Republican uprising, Spain was still subject to the Inquisition’s power and Methodism wasn’t heard of. A boy prince, married in infancy to a Grandee’s daughter, snatched from the arms of his Methodist monarch father, brought up anonymously as a gondolier, with no-one knowing who was heir to his father’s throne, provides the archetypal tangled plot for which the Savoy operas are so well known. Sullivan’s music soars with extravagance and Gilbert’s acerbic wit weaves deliciously around all the sub-plots to the dénouement. The Gondoliers enjoyed instant success in the late 19th century and continues to delight us today.
