‘WHO COULD ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE?’

Oxford Operatic Society Presents CRAZY FOR YOU

20-25 May 2002

CRAZY FOR YOU, the popular Gershwin musical, makes its début at the Oxford Playhouse on 20 May 2002, performed by the Oxford Operatic Society. Filled with fast-moving dialogue, song and dance, the action takes place around Zangler’s Follies in New York and the main street in Deadrock, Nevada.

CRAZY FOR YOU tells the story of an ambitious, would-be singer and dancer from New York, who saves the tiny theatre of Deadrock Nevada from closure - by putting on a show. In the process he falls in love but, as we all know, the course of love never runs smooth…

Full of fantastic songs by George and Ira Gershwin and updated for a modern audience in 1992, CRAZY FOR YOU first opened on Broadway in February 1992 and in London a year later. A fast, funny, fantasy-filled show with an upbeat, happy ending, the show was a ‘Tony Award’ winner for best musical in 1992 and winner of the ‘American Express Award’ for best new musical in 1993.

Well-known songs include: ‘I Got Rhythm’; Someone to Watch Over Me’; They Can’t Take That Away From Me’ and ‘Nice Work if You Can Get It’. One of the rediscovered songs, "K-ra-zy For You", became the title of the new, critically-acclaimed show.

Acclaim for the show includes:

"One of those rare and wonderful evenings that send you into the night with an inane grin of happiness on your face". Daily Telegraph

"It’s the theatrical equivalent of a mouthful of vitamins". Sunday Express

CRAZY FOR YOU sees Dave Crewe’s 50th performance on stage; the all-singing and dancing Bobby Child is a role he has wanted to play for a long time. Sarah Kinsella, a newcomer to the Society but not to the Oxford stage, appears in the role of Polly Baker, the only girl in Deadrock and the object of Bobby’s affections.

CRAZY FOR YOU also sees the return to Oxford Operatic of Director Phil Garner, who has previously directed CAROUSEL and ME AND MY GIRL with the Society. Michael Evans is Musical Director and the show is choreographed by Celia Clark.

Notes to Editors:

In 1992 Ken Ludwig developed and updated the original 1930s musical GIRL CRAZY, by George and Ira Gershwin. It opened in Broadway in February of that year to huge critical acclaim. It ran for four years, gave 1643 performances, and won many awards, including 3 Tonys.

Oxford Operatic Society’s next two shows will be CANDIDE in Autumn 2002 and OKLAHOMA in Spring 2003.
